Senior Care Where Compassion is at The Heart of Care!

Our Story

Big Heart Carers was founded in early 2017 by Phillip Magliolo, inspired by a deeply personal journey with caregiving. The idea was born when a friend entrusted him to care for his mother, Phillip's first client, who was living with Alzheimer's. This experience, paired with his own father's battle with Lewy Body Dementia, laid the foundation for the creation of Big Heart Carers.

The business became a heartfelt tribute to his father, rooted in a mission to care for others facing similar health challenges with compassion and dignity.

Phillip's caregiving journey deepened when he also cared for his mother, who had suffered two strokes, was in remission from breast cancer, and later passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences gave Phillip a profound understanding of the emotional and physical demands families face and instilled in him a strong sense of purpose.

Origin of Big Heart Carers

Big Heart Carers was born from a heartfelt moment that deeply moved Phillip, the founder, and continues to shape the organisation's values today.

He had helped a 90-year-old lady that had fallen. She spent the entire night, on the cold floor alone, until her granddaughter stumbled across her the next morning.

After helping her back to bed and ensuring she was comfortable, she held his hand and softly whispered, "Phillip, you have a big heart." In that quiet, heartfelt moment, he realised that true caregiving isn't just a duty, it's a calling rooted in compassion and humanity. Those words lingered, inspiring the vision for Big Heart Carers, a place "where care comes from the heart", and every act is a reflection of love and presence.

Why Home-Based Caring?

Home-based care allows clients to remain in familiar, comfortable surroundings while receiving the personal attention and dignity that institutional care often can't provide — supported by a dedicated caregiver who gets to know them individually.

Supporting Families Around the World

Many South Africans living abroad worry about how they can support a parent or loved one back home. Whether you are in the United States, United Kingdom, South Korea or elsewhere in the world, having someone you trust nearby can provide reassurance when you cannot always be there yourself.

Big Heart Carers provides a trusted local presence for your loved one, while helping families remain connected and informed about their care.

Thousands of kilometres may separate you, but with the right care, your loved one is never truly on their own.

The Benefits of Home-Based Care for Alzheimer's & Dementia

For someone living with Alzheimer's or dementia, familiar surroundings and established routines can provide an important sense of comfort, security and consistency.

Remaining at home can help reduce the confusion and agitation that may occur when a person is placed in an unfamiliar environment. Moving to a new setting can be stressful, and changes in surroundings and routines may temporarily increase confusion, anxiety or behavioural symptoms.

Home-based care allows support to be provided in an environment the person already knows, with one-on-one attention shaped around their individual routines, preferences and needs.

Most importantly, care at home allows the person to remain surrounded by the familiarity of their own environment while receiving the support they need. This can help preserve individuality, familiarity, dignity and quality of life.
